The Echo Project is a community-led research process and exhibition, driven by the community of Anderson, South Carolina. We aimed to empower Anderson County community members to share their narratives, voices, and stories that might have been overlooked or neglected. The process consisted of studio and community collaboration, collecting and documenting individual stories, creating and constructing elements of a brand system, and organizing a public exhibition.

Our studio brief aimed to foster a sense of belonging, inclusivity, and involvement by creating an applicable space for everyone. For weeks, we gained insight and understanding of who we were designing for, collectively converging on a design-research process that involved collecting stories from the community. We crafted a set of 10 prototype boxes that held prompt cards asking: how has your journey shaped who you are? With the help of local businesses, we were able to place boxes and hang posters around downtown Anderson. After three weeks, we were overjoyed to have received more stories than expected.

The event was held in a vacant downtown storefront on December 1st, inviting all members of the Anderson Community to view the collection of displayed stories and share their own. The Echo Project embraced the power of a narrative, bringing others together through restorative hope.
